Contains photographs of the following military units: 3rd Cavalry Group; 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. General description of the collection: The James H. Polk photograph collection consists of photos spanning the military service of James H. Polk from WWII through his retirement as a full general in March 1971. Photos are of the 3rd Cavalry Group and 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, which Polk commanded as a colonel during WWII. Polk commanded various armored units both in the continental United States (CONUS) and in Europe. There are numerous photos of training activities in Germany and of the visit of President John F. Kennedy to Berlin in 1963. Photos of various social functions and of many activities as Commander in Chief, United States Army Europe (USAREUR) along with the Seventh (7th) Army are found within the collection.
